    1. Re read in February 2012 This is too cute Not the plague stuff that s all rather horrible, obviously but Alice Paynton is hilarious and adorable By far my favourite diarist in the My Story series Although she writes like a 17th Century girl, she sounds just like a modern teenager Here s a quote from near the beginning of the book Aunt Mary teased me again about my distrust of horses To prove her wrong I rode the big bay but fell off on to some hay which made them all laugh Even Aunt Nell laughed [...]

    2. Not the most amazing diary I ve read before, although it kept my attention the whole time I read it pretty fast to see if it was okay for my sister There wasn t much plothah I know, my diary has no plot whatsoever, but being a book I can mention it D I wanted to know about Edward, who was suddenly thrown into the story at the end He seems to be such a nice character, but there is little said of him There is a lot of talk of prayer and asking God for help I didn t like that Alice felt like she h [...]

    3. Not for me I could not immerse myself in the events taking place, and I could not connect with 14 year old Alice I m not sure why, maybe it was the mood I was in, or the state of mind I had while reading it, but for whatever reason this book fell really short of what my expectations were When rumors of the plague start emerging, Alice finds herself in constant fear of getting the disease As the death tolls are mounting, Alice can barely leave the house, until her own Aunt Nell falls sick Alice r [...]

This book is one in the My Story series The books in this series are fictional diaries of young girls living during different events in world history.Thirteen year old Alice Paynton lives in the busy and crowded city of London in 1665 She lives with her father and his sister, her Aunt Nell, who has raised Alice since her mother died giving birth to her Alice begins her diary writing of happy events, such as seeing plays at the theater However, a dark shadow begins to fall over London as the bubo [...]

    5. I read this book thinking it might be a new way to present information about the Black Plague to students in 7 8 class I think it is a great book for that purpose It was interesting and based on factual accounts of the time The main character Alice, was certainly a brave and resourceful young girl I enjoyed it.

    7. Before I start my review I would like to say I loved one of the last lines, He believes that we learn from our mistakes and grow strong from our suffering those are such wise words and it happened with Alice also We saw her grow from a naive girl into an ideal woman as responsibility was put upon her shoulders and she was forced to grow up I loved that development I also love that despite this being fictional I learnt a lot about the plague and the great fire of London It felt like you were the [...]

    8. I m going to be honest this isn t a book I would have gone out and bought as it isn t Young Adult but I am really glad I received it.I teach high school history and find it hard at times to find good, accurate historical novels for a younger audience and I am now pleased to say I have found a whole series of them. What I liked about this book is that it was very accessible for younger readers and I liked the diary style of it I liked that it was written by a person of a similiar age of the intend [...]

    9. A good quick read, this book tells the story of the Great Plague and Fire of London through the diaries of forteen year old Alice Paynton I loved how the author sets up the notion of normality within London and surrounding areas, contrasting as it does with the catastrophe of forthcoming events.A good read for all ages. This is a BookCrossing book which will now be passed on for someone else to enjoy do let me know if you would like it.

    11. Really good book, I thoroughly enjoyed reading Alice s diary I was transported to her time and her suffering during the great plague I really felt for her when she was trapped inside her home nursing her aunt Nell, struggling to cope, lack of food and lack of social interaction Her days just kept getting worse and she struggled and as horrific events kept happening She was a very brave and heroic at times enforcing her strength and courage to stand up for her self and for others not matter the [...]

    12. Disappointingly bland My Story books are usually a bit interesting, but this one dragged and absolutely shouldn t have the premise was interesting enough for two books by far But plague novels need to have something to set them apart a new plot, fantastic writing, something and this one is a fairly mediocre entry into the genre For my full review including spoilers, check out Young Adult Historical Vault yahistoricalvault 2017 04

    13. As with all of the My Story books, there is a great blend between history book and middle aged fiction that works very well and will both entertain and educate young readers I enjoyed it as an adult for the way it handles the diary form and how it is able to convey a different time in an accessible way It can feel a bit forced at points, but overall it was an interesting read.

    17. I came across this book whilst browsing on my kindle I love anything to do with this period of history and this book was read in just over 24 hours and I loved it.Alice is only 13 years old in 1666, and the Black Plague has its grip on London The things that people did to protect themselves from this disease was so strange The great fire of London in 1666 is also in this book too, and nearly half of London was destroyed by the Great Fire of London in 1666.It describes peoples superstitions , and [...]

    18. This is an excellent contribution to the series There are a few little grammatical niggles here and there, but they are infrequent so I can overlook that The boyfriend situation is rather sudden as well, not to mention unnecessary, but overall this is definitely one of the better My Story books The voice is strong and the writing focused it gives a great deal of information about the plague of 1665, and then the Great Fire of London of 1666, and these books can be counted on to be pretty accurat [...]

This book could be so much I really enjoyed the historical aspects and the reality of it But some things in this book coughcough could ve been slower and convincing I love Alice Paynton, I would love to be her friend Such a headstrong and determined girl HIGH FIVE The writing was really unique because it was almost like 17th century English literature However, thanks to the humorless tone and emotionless sentences, I didn t feel as much as I d like to feel when reading a book and having a fict [...]

Rating 1,5This was pretty boring with a slightly annoying main character Much babbling about God, her dog, how guilty she feels and romance stuff like how she wants to marry every single guy Predictable story too I just found it pretty MEH The historical part was the only interesting thing great historical note in the end I just think this could have been done better by the author not all young women are interested in marrying even if that was what they were destined to do then and even now.So o [...]

Musim rict, ze me tahle edice velmi prijemne prekvapila Konecne nekoho napadlo velmi peknou, nenucenou formou zprostredkovat detem blizsi informace o dulezitych dejinnych udalostech, nez jen pouhym biflovanim nicnerikajicich dat ve skole Bavilo me cist si, jak uvazuje divka v 17 stoleti, zaujala me spousta z jejich myslenek, ktere jsou dnesnimu cloveku tak cizi, a presto si dokaze predstavit, ze byly tehdejsim lidem vlastni Velmi prijemne a rychle se to cte a zanecha to kladne dojmy.

    24. This entire series is a wonderful way to learn history or teach it to adolescents I find today s generations seem to recall when they learn through other people pop songs, celebrity gossip, etc , so what better way to teach history than through someone else s perspective Yes, authentic diaries would be better , but would the language really hold the modern student s attention Did the diary writer know what WOULD be important in the context of history Probably not.

    25. All in all a very pleasant read, these books are great to take in every once in a while and I love the historical aspect and how personal it feels with the diary entry format Alice made me smile at times in the way that she is just a typical teenager but set in a different time period. There are also a few pages with images and information about the plague great fire of London which was great to flick through at be end.

    26. If you are a nine year old boy I suggest not reading this book because I am nine The only reason I liked is because it had action and the great fire of London I only gave it three stars because it s about a girl s diary, and I am not a girl The problem is that her dad is gone and her aunt has the plague.

    27. In general, autobiographies, biographies, diaries etc tend to bore me, but this did not It was one of the best history lessons I ve ever had, and I found it easy to relate to being almost the same age as Alice Wrote and performed a short monologue for drama class with info adapted from this story, I think it went pretty well

    28. Historical story centered on 1665 1666 with good central fictional narrator Accurate and interesting, but aimed at a younger reader and a diary format which I do not personally care for hence my low score But to be fair to Pamela Oldfield I read from cover to cover so it was ok.
