    1. Okay, there s a bit too much shmaltz towards the end With that out of the way, we have here a wonderfully Machiavellian Doctor, but one who is the good old monster slayer we all love under it all I m what monsters like you are scared of indeed What a wonderfully original set up, where a time travel demo, a cross stitch convention and a new age retreat happening in the same hotel add up to a chain of events that enable a fearsome race from another dimension to invade ours Lots of action and cliff [...]

    2. I enjoyed the first half of this mostly due to the excellent characterizations Ace and Benny were perfectly written and played, naturally enough, and it was fun hearing them do their thing But then the aliens invaded and it became a bunch of yelling and running around, and the Doctor was mysterious and withheld his plan, and bystanders died, and it was all too familiar and ended exactly the way I thought it would.

    4. Ace and the Doctor face their fears and doubts in the form of one of the scariest monsters yet Great story that dives straight into the Doctor s own mind Apparently it s well furnished Who d have thought

    7. Why did they make the carpet of this hotel s corridors so rough that you can t haul a body along it Actually, I think I may just have answered my own question Bernice Summerfield. Finally Paul Cornell, who is the architect of what is most great about the Virgin New Adventures Doctor Who novels, gets a turn and he plunks us right smack into the center of the Virgin verse We get the grim, Machiavellian Seventh Doctor, the angry, post Dalek Wars Ace and Cornell s companion invention, Dr Bernice Benn [...]

    8. At one point in this story I thought, Hmm, the characters are all trapped in a building in which religious rituals have been taking place and are under siege by creatures from another dimension I wonder who wrote this And I was right Actually it was striking to listen to two consecutive stories featuring dark Seven taken from opposite ends of his timeline I enjoyed this one rather the story is rather better constructed, the characterisation of the hotel guests caught up in the horrors of alien [...]

    9. The Doctor, Benny and Ace land in a hotel where the Scourge are staging an invasion This is set in the New Adventures universe after Ace has come back after becoming a professional Dalek killer It is quite fun, there are 3 conventions at the hotel and those are done really well It handles the manipulative doctor amazingly, and how his companions are now able to guess what is going on I remember when the sound effects were done for this story I d just left a talk at a con in Manchester, and heard [...]

    10. Great story, as one should expect from Paul Cornell A dark and somewhat cerebral story with a bit of tie in to Timewyrm Revelation also by Paul Cornell, of course The story gets very self aware at parts, calling out some of the usual tropes of DW stories As with many of Cornell stories the story is deeply concerned with the human psyche The 7th Doctor is captured very well as a manipulator and is brilliantly imperfect As if a good story isn t enough, you ve got Benny and Ace Can t go wrong there [...]

    11. I really enjoyed this There was something very pleasing about a story that s main point was that demons are just our own self doubt I really loved the ending where Bernice came through with all the things that she loved It really just summed up why she is such a brilliant character and why I love her so much Parts of this seemed a bit slow, perhaps it could have been better as a slightly shorter story but it was still very enjoyable I m really liking the dynamic of Ace, Benny and the Doctor.

    12. The plot of this one never really grabbed me an absolute rarity for anything written by Paul Cornell , but he writes the main characters VERY well, and manages to create interesting bit players Despite it never really grabbing me, still worth a listen for great dialogue, and some brilliant performances, especially from Sylvester McCoy as the Doctor Oh, and they make fun of Radiohead That s always good.

    14. Seventh Doctor, Bernice and Ace find themselves in a hotel along with a cross stitch convention, a physics conference concerning time travel, and a spiritualist meet up For some reason, all this together creates enough of a gestalt to let creatures of the void through McCoy s definitely got plots within plots going on this one though Excellent story.
