    About John Lewis

    1. Librarian Note There is than one author in the GoodReads database with this name.

    1. I picked this book up while on vacation on the isle of Jersey where the story is set The author was a doctor who never intended to stay on the island during the German Occupation but due to a number of circumstances ended up spending five years living under the Nazi rule while his wife was in England in labour when last he heard, It took ten months before he even found out that he had a son, and the first time he got to meet the boy was on his fifth birthday Dr Lewis is very open about the fact [...]

    2. Reading about the Nazi occupation of Jersey during the Second World War, you quickly realise what a relatively cushty time the members of the occupying forces had when compared to the experiences of their comrades in mainland Europe While thousands of men were being butchered as far away as Russia and the Middle East on the orders of an insane dictator, the troops in Jersey had a comparatively peaceful and benign job, watching over a bunch of quite poor and fairly cooperative islanders, making s [...]

    3. To continue with my fascination with the island of Jersey, I ordered this book about the Nazi occupation of Jersey during WW2 This was an interesting read as these people in Jersey faced starvation toward the end of the war Dr Lewis tells what the people did to replace ever shortages of food, medicine, and other necessaries during the war It was kind of sad that Britain abandoned this small island, but I guess there was no choice with the Brits having to deal with constant bombing of their main [...]

    4. 3 1 2 Stars Entertaining account of the awful occupation by the Germans on Jersey Island during WWII This charming doctor had his hands full caring for all kinds of patients in a time when resources were extremely limited I loved hearing about the ways in which he tried to skirt around or dupe the Germans Only irritating thing were the continual typos throughout the Kindle book, which was very disappointing.
