    1. 3.5 Stars What can I say I have a soft spot when it comes to all things urban fantasy and this did not shirk on some great moments Plus, throw in some romance and the notion of mates, and you have me at hello. This starts out with Devon, who returns to Rowan Harbor at the urgent request of his grandmother Unbeknownst to him, a huge amount of expectations are awaiting him he just needs to figure some things out and take that next step towards his destiny That would all be well and done, but everyo [...]

    2. 4 StarsBlackbird in the Reeds is the first novel in Sam Burns new urban fantasy series, The Rowan Harbor Cycle. This initial story introduces its readers to the enigmatic small town of Rowan Harbor and all of its unusual inhabitants The supernatural folk are in abundance here, but as not to spoil the fun I won t name names, as I believe half the joy of reading this particular story was in piecing together the mystery of what was going on in the town and in working out what type of supernatural be [...]

    3. I m a sucker for a good fantasy story and Blackbird in the Reeds delivers the world building and character building that I crave without being so immersive it misses the plot Told from Devon Murphy s single, third person point of view, it follows his adventures after rushing from Minnesota to the coast of Oregon because his grandmother needs him to return home to the eccentric town of Rowan Harbor Devon s than happy to come to his Gran s call and to help her, but there s quite a bit of mystery [...]

    4. I ve never read Sam Burns before but this is her first venture into paranormal apparently anyway and all I can say is that she s done a damn fine job with it.It s difficult to review this book without giving away too much but let s just say whimsical and quirky could have been made to describe it.There s a gorgeous sense of the ethereal and an otherworldly air about everything which happens when Devon returns to his childhood home after his gran calls to say she needs him. From giant wolves, a my [...]

    5. 4.5 stars This, ladies and gents, this is how you write the first book in a new series The world building and character development in this book are absolutely fabulous There is absolutely no info dump Each piece of new information is revealed via the plot progression, and while I still had no idea what was actually going on at about 30% in, I couldn t wait to find out.Devon Murphy, from whose 3rd person POV the story is told, rushes home to Rowan Harbor, Oregon, at the request of his grandmothe [...]

    6. Who knew that such a small town could hold such big secrets Devon Murphy has been away from Rowan Harbor for most of his adult life Wandering, mostly, unable to find a place that he fits or people that he can trust to really care for him When his grandmother calls asking cryptically for him to come back, he loads up his car and heads back west to Oregon Where he almost hits a deer, crashes his car, breaks his wrist, and talks to what he can only presume is a hallucination of a very helpful wolf [...]

    7. 3.75 stars rounded upAh, Rowan Harbor a small town in Oregon where everyone seems to be related to everyone we have The Lanes, the Hunters, The Cormiers, the McKenzie I tried to keep tracks lol that is also harboring a secret And this is where Devon Murphy returns to.As a start for a series that will span NINE books I think this was a pretty good one I thought it had nice mystery to it as well, and I didn t figure out who the culprit was Burns writing flows nicely, with infused humor too There s [...]

    8. I want to live in Rowan Harbor Seriously, I d be very happy there with a slightly odd bunch of interesting characters I found the writing smooth and unhurried While some might say it was slow in the beginning I really enjoyed the pacing as the author allowed us to meet and greet the citizens of Rowan Harbor with Devon We know from the very beginning there is something different about the town and it s inhabitants and I enjoyed the way everything was slowly revealed There is no real angst and th [...]

    9. Sam Burns is quickly rising to be one of my must read authors I wasn t sure what to expect with Blackbird in the Reeds since it was taking on a paranormal and fantasy plot, but I was so impressed with the author s other books I took a chance I shouldn t have been worried the story delivered a wonderful combination of world building and intriguing and unique characters, mystery in spades, and the foundation of a lovely little romance. The story is told via Devon s third person POV, and I felt he c [...]

    10. 3.5I enjoyed the start of this story where a guy Devon was summoned back into his home town by his grandmother It s a small town at the Oregon coast line surrounded by woods and as safe haven for a lot of secrets At the start the pace of the story is calm and gives you the necessary mysterious feeling where you know than Devon but still not enough to stop wondering how everything fits together and who s who It s not the dangerous kind of mysterious or something with gothic vibessary pieces like [...]

A Joyfully Jay review 4.5 starsDevon Murphy grew up in the small town of Rowan Harbor, a town where everyone knows everyone else and has their nose firmly in everyone else s business While languishing in his latest temp job somewhere in Minnesota, Devon gets a call from his grandmother asking him to come home and asking for help Because she asked which she never does, and wouldn t do without a good reason Devon drops everything and starts driving to Oregon As the long hours and endless miles cat [...]

    12. ARC kindly provided by the author to me in exchange for an honest review Blackbird in the Reeds is my first book by the author but not her debut work When I read the blurb I was intrigued by the slighly paranormal, magical description and the fantasy touch Not being a high fantasy story but I would say an urban fantasy one, the book had a great flow in words and pace, it mesmerizes you, captures you but let you still be in the present but the lines are blurring and you start to think along with [...]

    13. This was a great paranormal read but so much The story is at heart a mystery three mysteries really The first is what is going with the town itself Lots of little things don t add up and people are surely than they seem but what There s also the mystery of who is trying to hurt or maybe kill new teacher in town, Mira But to me the most compelling mystery is what exactly is Devon, where do his special ability or curse come from The story was perfectly teased out to keep me guessing, and I m rea [...]

    14. This is the first book in The Rowan Harbor Cycle and I have to be completely honest in saying that I loved his book and cannot wait for the next book to come out Sam Burns did such an incredible job in this book This is one of those books that within the first few pages of reading it I knew I was going to love it and boy was I not wrong The further I got into this read the the mystery of what is going on in the small town of Rowan came to light Devon has not back to the town that he was born in [...]

    15. This story pulled me in from the moment I started reading Devon is a wonderfully deep character that shows us who he is through his thoughts When he asked if the tree he hit was okay, I knew that I would love this story There is a mystery about a wolf, strange things happening in the town, especially with people who moved to Rowan Harbor, and you wonder if Devon is going to stay in town this time I have to admit that the romance is slow, but it s totally worth the wait Especially after meeting W [...]

Funny, cute, and mysterious.Oak, they re my favorite character, I think Almost reminds me of the robot from Hitchhiker s guidey less depressed I love fairytale remakes, especially when they re very obscure Devon, his grandma, a grumpy wolf shifter and a town full of secrets, it s a perfect combo I m super curious as to what s changed Jesse, I can t wait to move on to Holly Oak.

    17. There are just no words to describe how good this book is You are pulled into this town and everything happening from the first page There is humor, mystery, great secondary characters, a story line that will keep you hooked, and amazing tension between Devon and Wade Now, what about the next one Please

    18. I like the characters and the town, but romance seemed to come from out of no where with no real build up Devon and Wade barely exchange than a few words the first half of the book and then, about half way, they re kissing, and being all lovey dovey, and they still don t know each other I found that annoying, but I did like the rest of the story.

    19. What Sam Burns is doing here is incredibly ambitious The Rowan Harbor Cycle is three trilogies, nine books in all The books are being self published, and she plans to release all nine books this year 2018 , with the final book release planned by December Now, if this was a series of short stories or even novellas I d still be impressed, but these are 200 page books Judging from the first two books, the whole series is going to be great Rowan Harbor, a small town on the Oregon coast, has secrets [...]

Devon has made practice of keeping everyone at arm s length so there is nothing holding him back when his grandmother asks him for help Return to the small town of Rowan Harbor doesn t start auspiciously, because he has a car accident and hallucinates a wolf Things start looking up when he meets handsome deputy Sparks fly literally and figuratively.I m rather fond of paranormal romance books but this one turned out not to be to my taste I found the plot scattered and uneven and couldn t connect [...]

    23. 4.5 Stars This book is by a new to me author, Sam Burns, and I was pleasantly surprised by the amount of information and world building that she managed to include in this first installment of this series without making it overbearing Devon was awesome and I adored him He was such a fun, quirky character to read and that made connecting to him so much easier We didn t really get to see much of Wade during the first half of the book, which was my only real gripe against this book, so it took me a [...]

    24. 2.5 stars, rounded upOkay, so the first half of this book was awesome I thought the author did really well at balancing the facts that the reader knows but the protagonist is still figuring out the hints weren t too heavy handed, and the characters in the know weren t too smug about it, and the odd things happening had a nice build up It also helped that it was well written and well edited not always a guarantee when you borrow a book from Kindle Unlimited But then, Devon finds out the town s se [...]

    25. If I could give a half, I d go with a 3.5 Writing was great, characters enjoyable but the plot was slow There was a hint of something deeper but it never went far The romance was a little rushed almost as if it was an after thought I think the book would have been better without it gasp right , and it if had to be there another 50 pages to develop the love interest would have been good I appreciated the getting to know the character in wolf form fun and cute but we needed to feel some chemistry [...]

Goodness wrapped up in a pink fuzzy blanketOr something like that I read this UF blind I didn t read the blurb, and I LOVED it from the beginning to the end Devon and crew made me laugh so much, but also engaged me in their story, which basically served as an introduction to the characters and the world, and I look forward to delving deeper into Rowan Harbor and it s residents.
