    This is a story of triumph over tragedy WWII Germany 1939A widow on a rural farm spots two young girls hiding in the forest behind her property line They are Migda and Sima Weissberg Two sisters who escaped a transport with the help of their brilliant but doomed father Attempting to hide just beyond the widow s view they are contemplating a raid of her garden as soon aThis is a story of triumph over tragedy WWII Germany 1939A widow on a rural farm spots two young girls hiding in the forest behind her property line They are Migda and Sima Weissberg Two sisters who escaped a transport with the help of their brilliant but doomed father Attempting to hide just beyond the widow s view they are contemplating a raid of her garden as soon as the sun had set The kind hearted middle aged Gerta Derrwachter emplores them to reveal themselves from behind the tree where she knows they are hiding, she introduces herself Slowly the sisters emerge from their hiding place Gerta decides to take them in and provide refuge for the hungry nine and ten year old girls Making a special place in her cellar to hide the girls, she knows the great risk of being caught hiding the young Jewish girls and the very real possibility of being executed for her act of kindness.For the next five years they are a family, alone on a dying farm In early 1945after the bombing of nearby Dresden a knock at the door brings a big change for the inhabitants of the farmhouse Gerta s daughter has arrived unannounced in the middle of the night to bring her fifteen year old to be entrusted into Gerta s care The girl is expecting a child Migda and Sima are listening from the cellar to the muffled voices from the kitchen above them Hearing well enough to determine the voices are all friendly and female they drift back into slumber The next morning they are called up from the cellar to meet Olga the fifteen year old expectant mother Delighted to have someone their same age they becomefast friends for what they don t yet know, will be a lifetime Before dawn the sisters hear screams from the upstairs livingroom They know it is the labor of young Olga.When the hidden hatch styled door is lifted and Gerta calls them they are excited to have a child that will be in their midst But there is no smile in return from Gerta She has something wrapped in butcher paper in her hands She tells the sisters that it was too soon, it was too small She then orders Sima to place the bundle on the grate of her wood burning stove Adding We send it back to heaven this way The ground still being too frozen for burial Gerta intends to cremate the tiny remains Sima does as instructed, placing the bundle in the warm oven to wait for Gerta s return with the much needed wood to build fierce flames As Gerta comes through the door with her arms loaded with wood she hears Sima s cries It s moving The bundle The infant will forever be remembered as the child of fire fire that would have ended her life had Sima not taken a second curious look inside the stove that cold morning in March.Gerta was once again outside hanging clothes when she spotted movement in the woods behind her Three former concentration camp victims slowly approached her Two men and one woman One had a bad leg and was almost being carried by the others His name was Harvey Ginsberg His companions were malnourished and trying to find the way to Dresden Gerta brought them to her table and fed them She listened to their stories She too wanted to journey to Dresden Her food supply was low, her soil depleted.She needed to find her daughter who was hopefully still alive in Berlin But it was too far to attempt on foot A planning committee evolved at the table when it was suggested by Migda that the old tractor in the barn might be of some use It hadn t run in years Harvey had been a former mechanic and insisted on taking a look It took days but through unwavering faith and determination Harvey did the impossible.
