    About Garth Ennis Jacen Burrows

    1. Ennis began his comic writing career in 1989 with the series Troubled Souls Appearing in the short lived but critically acclaimed British anthology Crisis and illustrated by McCrea, it told the story of a young, apolitical Protestant man caught up by fate in the violence of the Irish Troubles It spawned a sequel, For a Few Troubles More, a broad Belfast based comedy featuring two supporting characters from Troubled Souls, Dougie and Ivor, who would later get their own American comics series, Dicks, from Caliber in 1997, and several follow ups from Avatar.Another series for Crisis was True Faith, a religious satire inspired by his schooldays, this time drawn by Warren Pleece Ennis shortly after began to write for Crisis parent publication, 2000 AD He quickly graduated on to the title s flagship character, Judge Dredd, taking over from original creator John Wagner for a period of several years Ennis first work on an American comic came in 1991 when he took over DC Comics s horror title Hellblazer, which he wrote until 1994, and for which he currently holds the title for most issues written Steve Dillon became the regular artist during the second half of Ennis s run Ennis landmark work to date is the 66 issue epic Preacher, which he co created with artist Steve Dillon Running from 1995 to 2000, it was a tale of a preacher with supernatural powers, searching literally for God who has abandoned his creation. While Preacher was running, Ennis began a series set in the DC universe called Hitman Despite being lower profile than Preacher, Hitman ran for 60 issues plus specials from 1996 to 2001, veering wildly from violent action to humour to an examination of male friendship under fire.Other comic projects Ennis wrote during this time period include Goddess, Bloody Mary, Unknown Soldier, and Pride Joy, all for DC Vertigo, as well as origin stories for The Darkness for Image Comics and Shadowman for Valiant Comics. After the end of Hitman, Ennis was lured to Marvel Comics with the promise from Editor in Chief Joe Quesada that he could write The Punisher as long as he cared to Instead of largely comical tone of these issues, he decided to make a much serious series, re launched under Marvel s MAX imprint. In 2001 he briefly returned to UK comics to write the epic Helter Skelter for Judge Dredd.Other comics Ennis has written include War Story with various artists for DC The Pro for Image Comics The Authority for Wildstorm Just a Pilgrim for Black Bull Press, and 303, Chronicles of Wormwood a six issue mini series about the Antichrist , and a western comic book, Streets of Glory for Avatar Press. In 2008 Ennis ended his five year run on Punisher MAX to debut a new Marvel title, War Is Hell The First Flight of the Phantom Eagle In June 2008, at Wizard World, Philadelphia, Ennis announced several new projects, including a metaseries of war comics called Battlefields from Dynamite made up of mini series including Night Witches, Dear Billy and Tankies, another Chronicles of Wormwood mini series and Crossed both at Avatar, a six issue miniseries about Butcher from The Boys and a Punisher project reuniting him with artist Steve Dillon subsequently specified to be a weekly mini series entitled Punisher War Zone, to be released concurrently with the film of the same name.Taken from enpedia wiki Garth_Ennis

    1. Again I am baffled by the immaturity exhibited by a fairly acclaimed comic book I swear if I didn t know better, I d have said Mark Millar had written this.It seems to be a common theme among comic book writers that a Everyone in the world is an inherent dickwad Who the hell would steal from a cash register with witnesses instead of calling an ambulance or just running away when the registrar keels over from a heart attack And of course, the man who donates to all the orphanages and charities is [...]

    3. Wormwood, the AntiChrist, is a TV exec making cutting edge programming The Wire , 24 , The Sopranos type stuff whose friends are a talking rabbit and Jay, or Jesus, a brain damaged black messiah who sits in a dive bar drinking Guinness all day His father, Satan, visits him one day and Wormwood realises Armageddon is about to be brought about, that his dad is trying to make him fight his friend Jay and bring about the destruction of the world If you re a fan of Ennis work like I am you ll be fami [...]

    4. Time hasn t dulled Ennis zest for blasphemy, although it all seems a bit tired by now We ve been over this ground before, in his Hellblazer run and in Preacher Some of this is amusing, some of it interesting, as Ennis tries to offer yet another take on all the aspects of Christian mythology that he s already played with before, and some of it just feels redundant and juvenile Jacen Burroughs art deserves a special mention, he has a real flair for the monstrous, as also seen in his work on Alan M [...]

    10. Jesus and the Antichrist are best friends One is the son of the Satan and the other the son of God Both have their problems and both have given up their respective destinies to pursue a life of normality here on Earth The Devil wants his son to start the Armageddon and God wants his son to sacrifice and martyr himself once again Of course things are not that easy as Jesus and Wormwood have become accustomed to their lives and do not wish it all to end Wormwood is actually a pretty nice guy and s [...]

    11. Once again, Garth Ennis solidifies his placement as my second favorite graphic novel writer EVER.Ennis somehow manages to fit everything you could ever possibly want into a storyline From The Boys to Preacher to Chronicles Of Wormwood, we have everything from ultra violence to hardcore sex, from dealing with serious concepts like religion and politics, to outlandish ridiculousness and much needed humor for levity s sake I mean, there s a talking bunny in this series, for fuck s sake Danny Wormwo [...]

Garth Ennis.

    14. This book shows a surprising sense of humor many little details are very tongue in cheek The storyline altogether is pretty cohesive, and the characters interestingly foil each other One unexpected element of this graphic novel is its subtle exploration of the discussion over destiny or fate versus free will or self determination The protagonist of this graphic novel enacts this age old debate in the way his identity and personality manifest This aspect of the story added a surprising depth to t [...]

    15. this is really probably like 3.5 stars but i ll be generous and round up because i REALLY love the idea of this, but as usual ennis is just well himself i guess judging from what i remember from preacher and his punisher runs like it s a really solid idea and plot and whatnot but it s that thing where it kind of starts out as satire parody but then goes into stupid offensive shit just for shock value and not because it has any kind of actual plot relevance or value and it s not even actually sh [...]

    16. Wow The Chronicles Of Wormwood is one incredible book, folks Danny Wormwood the antichrist is best friends with the second coming of Jesus, who got brain damage in an L.A riot His other best friend is a rabbit to whom he has given the power of speech, often to his regret Dad Satan wants Danny to play his part in bringing about Armageddon but he s having none of it The Catholic church, lead by foulmouthed Australian, Pope Jacko, wants Danny dead but God, like Satan, is interested in letting him [...]

    17. Wormwood is the story of the Antichrist, who is living in New York and not interested in the slightest to furthering the apocalypse He and his buddy Jesus are not interested in fighting their father s fight and want to let humanity decide for themselves, but outside forces are not ready to let that happen. It s a Garth Ennis book, so there is hardcore sex and violence galore, and the man hasn t met a taboo he hasn t ripped to shreds Still, I loved how they stressed again and again that Jesus spen [...]

    19. I just re read this for the third time Most hard core comic book fans will be at least peripherally familiar with Garth Ennis his current run on The Punisher is amazing, and sadly coming to a close this spring. This is some of my favorite Ennis Its dark, funny, irreverent, and flat out gross at times The main character is the antichrist who refuses to bring about the end of the world His best friend is Jay better known as Jesus Christ who decided he was going to make a bigger difference this time [...]

    20. Most enjoyable fare, at the level of Ennis stellar Preacher series The only thing that keeps Wormwood from achieving that 5th star is it s just too preachy irony notwithstanding His heart is clearly in the right place, but your characters can espouse a fun loving, do no harm philosophy without coming out and saying it, or indeed expounding upon it repeatedly This is not the sort of thing that usually bothers me, so either the infraction is egregious, or my standards have inexplicably come a long [...]

Fucking hilarious If you want a book that you pick up and laugh your ass off page to page this is it Ennis is taking it to organized religion but actually has some insightful things to say in between Papal orgies and foul mouthed rabbits There is a real interesting thing going on with Jesus and Wormwood about telling there respective fathers to go fuck themselves Also i really like the line in the book about how all Jesus wanted was people to treat each other right and all they ended up doing wa [...]

The Antichrist lives in contemporary U.S.A, is estranged from his dad and his mission and befriended Jesus, who also has some issues with his father Sounds like the premise of the worst slapstick comedy ever, but Garth Ennis has managed to turn it into a stylish and smart satire about humanity, society and religion Chronicles of Wormwood takes us to imaginative settings and situations, is funny and treats its characters with respect As a whole it s a greatly entertaining and cleverly relevant ex [...]

    25. I enjoyed the artwork, it was nice and clean with sharp edges While the plot and characters sound interesting from previews, when you actually read it you find it takes something that could be both interesting and grabbing and then and covers it in gore and vulgarity which seem intended to shock, but really just mask a lack of depth and character development. All in all, I was greatly disappointed.

    26. Pretty skippable The rabbit thing added interest I was initially turned off by the reconstructive surgery done on the bartender, but at least there was a decent one liner from it later on I thought the book shocked and offended just because it could, not to make any particular point There were perhaps two sympathetic characters Jay and Satan At least they cared and or were doing what they were supposed to be doing Everyone else I couldn t stand seeing.

Recommended to me by a friend, and this was just not my taste Too much crude language, brutal gore and sex thrown into the mix for me If that s your thing read Crossed if you haven t already you will be in for a treat of much blood, gore, sex, rape and much Back to Wormwood It wasn t all bad for me, a few things did humor me The talking Rabbit was cute, Jesus is black Which made me really happy to see and the prank Wormwood plays on the bartender was actually pretty funny.

Broad strokes, soft targets but hell, it s fun And an awful lot of religion poking isn t I can forgive Ennis a lot there s enough here that is original and genuinely wonderful enough to make up for the odd lapse into high school crudity and the fact that Ennis crude is, let s face it, still damn funny doesn t hurt at all Thoroughly enjoyable, and he deserves a bloody medal for the wonderful male friendship dynamic genuinely moving, once again God he s good at that.

    29. I surprisingly really loved this read The AntiChrist Wormwood s whole mindset of just leaving humanity to it s own devices without any interference is great And the fact that he s just like every other man and has trouble with women is even better If you like the occasional depraved and out of the ordinary read this is it.
