    About Fritz Leiber

    1. Fritz Reuter Leiber, Jr was one of the interesting of the young writers who came into HP Lovecraft s orbit, and some of his best early short fiction is horror rather than sf or fantasy He found his mature voice early in the first of the sword and sorcery adventures featuring the large sensitive barbarian Fafhrd and the small street smart ish Gray Mouser he returned to this series at various points in his career, using it sometimes for farce and sometimes for gloomy mood pieces The Swords of Lankhmar is perhaps the best single volume of their adventures Leiber s science fiction includes the planet smashing The Wanderer in which a large cast mostly survive flood, fire, and the sexual attentions of feline aliens, and the satirical A Spectre is Haunting Texas in which a gangling, exo skeleton clad actor from the Moon leads a revolution and finds his true love Leiber s late short fiction, and the fine horror novel Our Lady of Darkness, combine autobiographical issues like his struggle with depression and alcoholism with meditations on the emotional content of the fantastic genres Leiber s capacity for endless self reinvention and productive self examination kept him, until his death, one of the most modern of his sf generation.

    1. Green Millennium is about a man, Phil, and Arthur Dent type but without all the charm, i.e audience surrogate almost no personality who has a brief encounter with a magical green cat Lucky the cat makes everyone around him feel connected and loved In this world of conservative politics I was going to type hyper conservative politics, but then I realized that the religious right fictional president and his Bureau of Loyalty isn t that far off from what our current Republican candidate for preside [...]

    2. THE GREEN MILLENNIUM generally seems to be regarded as a minor Leiber novel not without reason, although it s full of good and certainly odd things, and involves themes that Leiber also used elsewhere, usually to better effect The society Leiber describes is febrile and unpleasant and now seems rather familiar Not that this current social madness is a deep secret or anything to be startled at What other results could have been expected when American society began to overvalue on the one hand sec [...]

    3. This is a fun, quirky book set in a dystopian future from the point of view of 1950s McCarthy Era There s lots of issues in the world with a conflict between the debauched liberal US with a strong undercurrent in politics for puritanical values, still facing off against the Soviets At the same time, the common everyday man has a spirit crushing job, and resorts to all sorts of escapism, from VR, exotic performance shows like male female wrestling and all sorts of pornography, while hoping their [...]

    6. Phil Gish is a man who feels out of place in an increasingly hectic world Into his life comes a small green kitten that he names Lucky that changes his life and involves him in a conspiracy that will change the world.I don t really have an awful lot to say about this book The last Leiber that I read was a collection of short stories that I loved, but this was a fairly straightforward adventure with some fairly odd characters There is some wry comment on America with prescient views of a vulgaris [...]

    7. So far, I find that I enjoy Lieber as a short story writer I assume it s because when he was writing the genre really was disdained as pulp than it is now so there was maybe of a market for short stories Who knows This book, and also The Big Time, are full of really fantastic ideas but the writing doesn t quite fulfill the promise of the super awesome premise On the other hand, I m a sucker for stories involving cats I really want to get Lieber and Heinlein together and show them some youtube [...]

    8. An aimless young man finds a stray cat, and ends up getting involved with male and female wrestlers, religious crackpots, gun toting psychoanalysts, girls with claws, hep thugs, world famous scientists, espers, vice syndicates, FBL raids, national and international crimes, and a whole lot of other things that were much, much too big for Phil Gish One of Fritz Leiber s lighter and lesser works But then again, maybe it just wasn t my kind of thing It reminded me of Douglas Adams Long Dark Tea Time [...]

    9. Great futuristic story in a super commercialized America, of Dick Tracy like evil characters vs other worldly beings including a very powerful sweet natured green cat and humanoids that are really alien horses, along with the green cat s unwitting friend Phil Great fun, vivid and still plausible futuristic scenes and technologies conceived by Leiber in 1953 Great dialogue and descriptions So many characters, had a hard time keeping track of who s who, but it didn t really matter.

    10. I just love Leiber Here s one where bemused everyman Phil Gish meets a miraculous little green alien with the power to make everyone kind, happy and peaceful Those in power, including the US government, the Soviets at their cold war worst and the local gangsters are very, very worried natch and much amusing mayhem follows Think Guys and Dolls with Cats.

    11. Because it s Fritz Leiber, it s obviously well written and entertaining However, this is one of Leiber s sligh novels A pot boiler, a caper, a comedy SF adventure That s not to say it isn t fun, and an easy read, but in the Leiber canon this is only of middling significance.

    13. I suppose one can only expect so much from a book set in the future of 1953 On the other hand, cats FTW
