    About Paul Kearney

    1. Paul Kearney was born in Ballymena, Northern Ireland, in 1967 He went to a local grammar school, and then to Lincoln College, Oxford, where he read Anglo Saxon, Old Norse, and Middle EnglishShortly after leaving Oxford, he went on a solitary climbing trip to the Isle of Skye, and it was after tumbling off a mountain there that the character of Michael Riven first came to him The first half of The Way to Babylon was composed shortly after, and taken up by the literary agents Campbell, Thomson McLaughlin Richard Evans at Victor Gollancz bought the book, and Gollancz then published Kearney s next seven books, including the Monarchies of God series. In the eight years subsequent to the publication of The Way to Babylon, Kearney lived in Copenhagen, New Jersey, and Cambridgeshire, but at present he makes his home a stone s throw from the sea in County Down, with his wife, two dogs, a beat up old boat, and far too many books.

Do you feel happy Are you cheerful right now Is everything peachy in your life Are you just not filled with joy and love Let s ruin that, shall we.Papa Kearney will take care of that.Mr Despodence continues the story of the Monarchies in the second volume, with intrigue, war and finest brutality If you think you ve read some grimdark books, then Kearney writes gruesomeblack stuff It s not the sum of words It s not specific scenes It s not violence for the sake of violence It s bleak, perfect de [...]

    3. SPOILERS.I honestly read most of these books in a row while on vacation, so I m kind of hazy on what happened in what book But at the end of the first book, there s Evil Pope and Good Pope, and there s a bunch of people running around, and the military incompetence of the supposedly amazing military nation is getting grating, and there s like Stuff And I think it s in this book it turns out that the secret Werewolf Skrull Infiltrators are actually Fuckwolves Like, they literally propagate like a [...]

    5. Really I think the only reason I m even docking a star on these books is that I m reading them immediately after two of my favorite trilogies I ve read in a long time, so when there is a scene or two here or there that I don t like, that s causing me to rate it 4 stars instead of 5 I still am staying up way too late reading these every night and that s how I know they are good Oh and that ending sigh

    7. Very goodThis is fast paced fantasy at its best Can t wait to read the next one My only quibble is that the female characters seem to be an after thought, they don t stand out like the men I would recommend the series to anyone.

    8. The Heretic Kings picks up just about where Hawkwood s Voyage left off, except not with the characters I most wanted to know about.Thankfully, this book contains much action and character development than the first book did Although, the author doesn t seem to have much need of female characters in this world of his,

    11. Once again I have to say Kearney delivered I had heard of this author here and there for the last few years so the fact that his new publisher is putting out his unfinished work has proven to be worthwhile reading for me I have to say I enjoyed this second part of the Monarchies series even than the first I would probably give it a little than four stars Only reason I did not give it a full five is that I could see a few things coming But even when I knew what to expect the delivery still was [...]

    12. I do not like to ask God to intervene on my behalf it smacks of hubris to assume that the Creator of the universe will think me, out of all His creations, worthy of attention I merely try to further what I believe to be His divine will In this instance, I needed two hundred barrels of pitch to set the Lower City alight Throughout my years of reading fantasy, I ve never been struck by a few sentences as much as this one It goes a long way in hinting the underlying religious and philosophical them [...]

When I finished the first book in this trilogy I wasn t so sure I wanted to even keep reading it, but this book redeemed itself Even though it s still dark, it managed to pull me in enough that when there was a scene change I got offended because I wanted to keep reading about the other characters story.I do like that there s a variety of plots all happening in conjunction adventure, military exploits, and religious political intrigue.I m not going to go on about how the author could ve just kep [...]

The book starts off right where we were left in Book 1, each of the plots continues on building intrigue suspense even while a lot of earth shaking revelations is made The adventure is filled with thrill the action is as always realistic This is one of the best combinations of fantasy and historical fiction, the world making of the Renaissance age is spectacular Each and every plot is interesting, having twists n turns all the way while keeping the heroism and action realistic I am really looki [...]

The 1st 1 3rd of this book was so slow and uninteresting that I almost gave up on this book and series I set it down for awhile and came back a couple of days later and tore through it The main characters are great, the auxiliary characters and plot lines plod along Over all, I am still really enjoying this series.

    20. loved this book, the grit and gun smoke of Sharpe, a dash of the back stabbing skullduggery how often can you use that word of Ice and Fire and some truly old school religious madness for good measure 9 10.
